Common Invoice Errors

A wrong read, date or product code can cost you for months before anyone spots it. Here’s what to verify on invoices and how to raise disputes calmly and clearly.

Most Common Billing Errors

1. Estimated readings: one of the most common headaches—suppliers guess when they lack reads and the stack-up can be materially wrong until corrected. Cross-check against meter types and bill layout.

2. Wrong meter read: a digit error can move usage by thousands of kWh—at an illustrative 22p/kWh, 3,000 kWh is about £660; always photograph the register when disputing. Compare standing charges to your contract too—switch periods create confusion.

3. Wrong tariff applied: System error charges you at wrong rate. Business tariff billed at higher rate.

4. Standing charge errors: Charged wrong daily rate or double-charged during supplier switch.

How to Spot Errors

  • Check if reading is estimated (marked 'E' on bill)
  • Compare this month's kWh to previous months - massive jump?
  • Check unit rate matches your contract
  • Verify standing charge matches contract
  • Check meter number on bill matches physical meter

How to Dispute

Step 1: Submit actual meter reading immediately - this proves the error

Step 2: Email supplier with "Billing Dispute" in subject line. Include meter reading photo, contract copy showing correct rate.

Step 3: Request corrected bill within 14 days

Step 4: If no response in 14 days, escalate to Ombudsman (free service)

Your Rights

You do NOT have to pay disputed charges while under investigation. Pay the undisputed amount only.

Ombudsman Services: Free, independent, can force supplier to refund you + compensation. File complaint at ombudsman-services.org

Prevention

  • Submit meter readings monthly on same date
  • Keep copy of signed contract
  • Check every bill within 7 days of receipt
  • Request AMR meter to eliminate estimated bills
